What Are Sten Logs & Wattles?

Sten logs and wattles are temporary or permanent sediment control measures used to slow surface runoff, capture sediment, and manage water flow on active construction sites. They are commonly installed along contours, at the base of slopes, in swales, and around drainage features to reduce erosion and support environmental compliance during and after construction.

Installation includes proper placement, trenching, anchoring, overlap, and termination in accordance with project drawings, erosion and sediment control (ESC) plans, and manufacturer requirements. Work is coordinated with grading, drainage, and construction sequencing to ensure effectiveness and avoid rework.

  • Sten logs and wattle installation is typically used to:
  • Control sediment migration and surface runoff
  • Stabilize slopes, swales, and disturbed areas
  • Protect downstream drainage systems and waterways
  • Support regulatory and environmental compliance
  • Maintain erosion control measures during construction activities
  • Achieve interim or final site stabilization and acceptance
